Reform for Welfare Food SchemePlans to reform the Welfare Food Scheme to give pregnant women, mothers and young children in low income groups in England access to a healthier diet have been published. The Committee on Medical Aspects of Food and Nutrition Policy has suggested that the scheme should include provision for fresh fruit and vegetables, cereal-based foods and other foods suitable for weaning, as well as the liquid milk and infant formula currently provided. The new scheme, to be implemented in 2004, will operate through fixed value vouchers broadly equivalent to the value of the current scheme, ie, seven pints of liquid milk. |
