Modernisation

The Society should be transparent

From Mr D. W. M. Davidson, FRPharmS

Under the guise of modernisation, political parties in power (and it could be any political party) use "spin" in order to make us believe that their policies are the only acceptable way forward. The Royal Pharmaceutical Society should not hide under "modernisation", but should say exactly what its long-tern (non-political) objectives are and that these can only be achieved by manipulation of the way the Society is run.

The Society must make it transparent what the end objectives are and make it clear that best practice and preferred options are not always what is suggested by governments. Independence must be retained where control freakery is dictating the future at the expense of the individual or group of individuals. We may agree with much of what is being done but need to be wary of the sting in the tail, which is short-term acceptance at the expense of long-term objectives. We may end up going down a path of no return or deviation — flexibility must be built in.

Douglas Davidson
Blairgowrie, Perthshire
