College of Mental Health Pharmacists/Industrial Pharmacists Group

Moving forward in mental health

A call for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society to be proactive in the mental health arena was made at a joint meeting of the College of Mental Health Pharmacists and the Industrial Pharmacists Group (IPG) at the Society's headquarters on 26 November.

The consensus of the meeting was that a major challenge for the Society in the National Health Service is how pharmaceutical experts from the many clinical specialties of both primary and secondary care can best be used to increase the profile of pharmacy in these areas. The pharmaceutical service provision for users of mental health services varies enormously from one area to another.

In situations where there is no designated post for a chief pharmacist in a mental health trust, there will be a lack of leadership and guidance at a time of great change. The Society should be promoting a national strategy, which its members can follow
