Mucolytics become prescribable on NHS

General practitioners have been told that they can now write National Health Service prescriptions for nine previously blacklisted mucolytic products.

Fabrol granules, Fluimucil granules, methylcysteine 100mg tablets, Mucodyne capsules, syrup, forte syrup, paediatric syrup and tablets, and Visclair tablets have all been deleted from Schedule 10 of the NHS (General Medical Services) Regulations 1992.

Because these products have been made prescribable, acetylcysteine granules and carbocisteine have also been deleted from the list of products that can only be prescribed in specified circumstances (Schedule 11 of the Regulations). Lilly's new treatment for erectile dysfunction (tadalafil, Cialis) has been added to Schedule 11. All the changes came into force on 1 February. Similar changes have been made for Scotland and Wales.
