Fish oil stabilises arterial plaquesOmega-3 fatty acids in fish oil stabilise atherosclerotic plaques, say researchers. They randomised 188 patients awaiting surgery to receive capsules containing sunflower oil, fish oil or a "control" oil. They found that patients given fish oil had fewer plaques with signs of inflammation than patients in either of the other groups. This indicates that the plaques are less likely to rupture, say the researchers (Lancet 2003;361:477). |
