Pharmacist prescribing

Time saved at the surgery

From Mr J. Downing, MRPharmS

Regarding the treatment of the various conditions presented to John Wilson by the public (PJ, 8 February, p184), the fact that he had to refer to the general practitioner is key. Did the GP really need to see the patient with impetigo?

I have had a similar case this week when a patient presented with what was clearly an impetigo rash. I referred her to the local surgery and she returned with a prescription for flucloxacillin and Fucidin. Did it really need a GP to treat this?

It is possible that the patient had seen the practice nurse who then made recommendations to the GP. Pharmacist prescribing could have saved time at the surgery for both patient and surgery staff.

Jim Downing
