The Profession

Dismay at poor image of the profession

From Mr R. A. W. Alcock, MRPharmS

At a time when pharmacy is presented with many threats, including the removal of restrictions coupled with the public's general disillusionment with and lack of respect for the medical profession, I would urge all pharmacists to do their bit in portraying a professional image to the public.

I am often dismayed at the impression the profession sometimes gives in news items or documentaries by the untidiness of the premises portrayed and by the appearance of the pharmacist.

I may be old-fashioned but a white coat, a suit or, at the very least, a shirt and tie would go a long way towards increasing respect from the public. Members of Parliament and other interested bodies need to be aware that we are highly trained professionals, well able to give advice and fulfil an extended role and preferable to any supermarket where you present your prescription, fill your basket and collect as you pass go.
