WHO treaty on tobacco

The World Health Organization has drawn up a public health treaty on tobacco control. The treaty, which will be presented to the World Health Assembly in May, governs tobacco taxation, smoking prevention and treatment, illicit trade, advertising, sponsorship and promotion, and product regulation.

The text includes a requirement for countries to promote treatment programmes to help people stop smoking and to encourage education to prevent people starting.
