Workforce survey

Questions raised about training of technicians

From Mrs A. Farrelly, MRPharmS

The result of the workforce survey shows that a majority of community pharmacists appear to be locums. How does this affect the training and continuing education of counter staff and technicians?

Many of the continuing education courses I have done emphasise the actions to be taken and training to be given to staff. Are locums in fact regularly working in the same places and able to give this support or are they simply "working as a pharmacist" and considering that this is not part of their duties? If so, this is worrying and a further study to find out why so many people choose to be locums would be a useful exercise. It raises further questions as to the training of "checking technicians" outside hospitals.

Anne Farrelly
Wallington, Surrey
