Dyspepsia: Quick reference (PDF 255K) and full guidance (PDF 840K)

New dyspepsia and diabetes guidelines

Two new sets of guidelines were published earlier this week. The first — a clinical guideline on dyspepsia — was launched by the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network. Its aim is to provide general practitioners and community pharmacists with clear recommendations on how dyspepsia should be managed.

It recommends that community pharmacists should advise patients reporting difficulty swallowing, evidence of gastrointestinal blood loss, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss or an abdominal mass to consult their general practitioner. The full guideline is available as a PDF (840K).

The second guideline, "Treating to target in type 2 diabetes", was launched by Diabetes UK at its annual conference held in Glasgow. It provides clinical recommendations to address insulin resistance and includes a step-wise treatment algorithm. The guideline, supported by an educational grant from GlaxoSmithKline, is available from the company's customer contact centre (tel 0800 221441).
