SSRI review stopped

A Medicines Control Agency expert group convened to review the safety of SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) has been dissolved after questions were raised about its membership.

Following the publication of allegations that two of the group's four members were GlaxoSmithKline shareholders, the Department of Health decided to set up a new review group. GSK manufactures Seroxat (paroxetine).

The membership of the new group is yet to be decided. The Department said that individuals' declared interests in the pharmaceutical industry will be taken into account when considering the appropriate membership.
