Hay fever

Masks can help while gardening

From Mr J. A. Goulding, MRPharmS

As a life-long hay fever sufferer with a similarly afflicted daughter, may I compliment Dr Pamela Mason on her exhaustive and illuminating article (PDF 65K) on the condition's management (PJ, 29 March, p443). I can certainly endorse her tips for preventing symptoms.

If my one-time colleague will forgive me, however, her one omission is any reference to the use of masks. For gardeners desperate to pursue their hobbies throughout the horticulturally important months of early summer — and prepared to ignore the stares of neighbours — the wearing of a specialist mask can mean valuable, symptom-free days, even at the height of the season.

John Goulding
Potters Bar, Hertfordshire
