The Society

Delete "inactive pharmacist" from Society's vocabulary

From Dr J. A. Hunt, FRPharmS

One of the most significant features of your report (PDF 55K) on the result of the continuing professional development survey (PJ, 29 March, p456) is the high level of response from retired pharmacists (22 per cent) and those at or approaching retirement age (25 per cent).

I have attended many British Pharmaceutical Conferences and Royal Pharmaceutical Society meetings at Lambeth over the years and have been active in local branch affairs, including terms as secretary and chairman. I have always been struck by the enthusiastic support for all these professional activities of the Society which is given by retired pharmacists. Should this support be discouraged in any way, the life of the Society would be greatly impoverished. Could we please, therefore, have the term "inactive pharmacist" deleted from the Society's vocabulary and senior members of the Society afforded the respect that they deserve?

John Hunt
Weymouth, Dorset
