The Journal

Is The Journal displaying bias?

From Mr A. Matalia, MRPharmS

In her news feature about the Office of Fair Trading report last week (PJ, 29 March, p431), Clare Bellingham wrote: "Pharmacists were offered a ray of hope this week." She should have written: "Pharmacy contractors were offered a ray of hope this week." Or better still: "Pharmacists hopes, dreams and ambitions were dealt a blow this week." Surely this is an example of bias.

Most pharmacists are employees or locums, in which case contract limitation is not in their interest. What evidence does Ms Bellingham have that contract limitation benefits most pharmacists?

A. Matalia
Coventry, West Midlands

CLARE BELLINGHAM says:

The statement reflects the feeling among the vast majority of pharmacists I have spoken to while researching this article and others. Opinions both for and against the OFT report are equally valid so Mr Matalia's letter is a useful contribution to the debate. However, his suggestion that "pharmacists hopes, dreams and ambitions were dealt a blow" is as biased as the statement he criticises.
