Treatments for coronary heart disease, cancer, dementia and eczema are just some of the drugs to be reviewed by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).

The new NICE work programme announced this week covers six clinical guidelines (which cover treatment of a specific disease) and 15 technology appraisals (which assess medicines use). Timetables of work for the new topics will be made available at the organisation's website (www.nice.org.uk) by the end of May.

Drugs to be reviewed include:

  • hormonal treatments for breast cancer
  • imatinib (Glivec)
  • gefitinib (Iressa)
  • statins
  • memantine (Ebixa)
  • omalizumab (Xoliar)
  • drotecogin (Xigris) and afelimomab (Segard)
  • pimecrolimus (Elidel) and tacrolimus (Protopic) and topical steroids
