Labour to abolish Welsh script charge

The Labour Party in Wales has promised that it will abolish prescription charges in the principality if it is returned to power in the National Assembly for Wales general election.

Announcing 10 policy pledges on 2 April, First Minister Rhodri Morgan said: "I give my absolute pledge that if we are returned to power on 1 May we will sweep away all prescription charges."

The plan is to phase out charges over the Assembly's next four-year term. The move will cost about £30m in lost prescription charge revenue. About 11 per cent of Welsh prescriptions attract the charge.
