DHEA of no benefit in Alzheimer'sDehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a supplement available from internet websites, does not improve cognitive performance in patients with Alzheimer's disease, say researchers. They conducted a randomised trial of DHEA versus placebo in 58 patients over six months and found that although a transient improvement in cognitive performance was seen at three months in the DHEA group, it narrowly missed statistical significance. No effect on cognitive function or global improvement was seen at six months (Neurology 2003;60:1071). |
