Sickle cell drug prevents deaths

Adults with moderate to severe sickle cell anaemia who take hydroxyurea have a lower mortality than those patients not taking this drug, a new study shows (JAMA 2003;289:1645).

Researchers estimated that the overall reduction in mortality after nine years of follow-up was 40 per cent. They add that over this period, no unexpected serious adverse effects of the treatment were observed.
