TributeHambleton In a tribute to the late Roger Hambleton (see column 1), Dr LARRY GIFFORD, dean, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Manchester, writes: Dr Roger Hambleton will be remembered by many former students of Manchester school of pharmacy for his lectures on sterility control and his practical classes in aseptic dispensing. He graduated in 1960 and was awarded the Miller medal for that year and began his academic career which was to continue for 28 years. His research interests were predominantly in the field of sterile manufacturing and he was particularly successful with his innovative work in developing the Lantor Cube. This has now become the industry standard and replaced the former Bowie-Dick test for porous load sterilisers. For this novel autoclave test pack he was awarded the first prize in the 1989 British Technology Group Academic Enterprise Competition and was presented with a trophy by Sir George Porter, president of the Royal Society. He took early retirement in 1989 and pursued his professional activities as a locum pharmacist. He had a love for choral work and was chairman of the Manchester Cantata for 10 years. His fine bass voice will be sadly missed around the choirs of Cheshire. He made a substantial contribution to the school and the university for which he will not be forgotten. Johnson In a tribute to the late Theodore Thomas Johnson (PJ, 22 March, p418), MIKE SMITH writes: It was my pleasure to work with Theo as a fellow non-executive director on the board of UniChem from 1986 to 1990. These were the exciting times of the run up to flotation and the co-op days were very interesting to say the least. Theo was of great support at this time and his well-thought-out and informed input to the board was invaluable some significant decisions were taken at this time. Theo was an accomplished golfer and taught me much about the game he loved. He was also excellent company, a great wit and raconteur, all those who knew him will miss him greatly. My thoughts are with Ann, Ian and Elaine, and the rest of the family at this sad time. |
