Council election

Voting change will not change Council's composition

From Mr R. C. Mills, MRPharmS

I fear that your editorial (PJ, 5 April, p460) on the change of voting policy for Royal Pharmaceutical Society Council elections misses the point.

A comparison with the procedure for election for parliamentary candidates is not valid because, as constituency members, we are voting for a single candidate. In elections for Council members we are electing seven candidates and, therefore, the use of a single transferable vote is surely not appropriate.

Furthermore, the threat that the use of the "first past the post" system will produce an unbalanced Council was disproved in the working party report on the possible change, issued by Council. A comparison of the compositions of past Councils under both voting systems showed little difference between the two so far as the representation of minority groups is concerned.
