Americans to advise PCTs on elderly care

Consultants from the United States' EverCare health management organisation are to help 10 primary care trusts in England develop nurse-based managed care schemes for the elderly.

In the USA, EverCare nurse practitioners act as key workers for patients and provide the majority of clinical care. Medicines management is an essential part of what they do.

The Department of Health says that EverCare achieves a 50 per cent reduction in the number of patients it looks after in care facilities being admitted to hospital, but with no change in mortality. Patients also take fewer prescribed medicines, which means fewer side effects and cost savings.
