Clarification on supply of citric acid to injectors

From Mrs D. K. Roberts, FRPharmS

In response to Dennis Brint's contention (PJ, 19 April, p546) concerning the legality of supply of citric acid to drug injectors the following clarification may be helpful.

The project to which Mr Brint refers (PJ, 29 March, p430) was approved by the Home Office drugs inspectorate, the Society, the regional procurators-fiscal for Glasgow and Strathkelvin, Paisley and Lanarkshire, Strathclyde police and the Lord Advocate for Scotland's office. It was a properly conducted pilot research project that was funded jointly by the Greater Glasgow Drug Action Team and the Scottish Executive's Effective Interventions Unit. The aim of the study was to assess the acceptability, effectiveness and efficiency of the provision of 100mg single use sachets of citric acid to injecting drug users.

The findings and recommendations from the report have been forwarded to the Home Office as part of its current consultation on the supply of paraphernalia to drug injectors. A full copy of the report is available here.
