The Industry

Lucrative "me-too" drugs a priority

From Mr U. G. Patel, MRPharmS

In your editorial "Villains of the piece" (PJ, 3 May, p602), you seem to have taken up the cause of the powerful pharmaceutical industry. You say that companies spend a lot of time and money on research and development, and that this fact was glossed over in the Channel 4 programme. However, you do not mention that the programme talked about how most of this expensive research goes into the development of lucrative "me-too" drugs and not much is being done about diseases, such as malaria, where the profit for the industry is minimal.
