ABPI launches clinical trials register on the web

An online register of industry-sponsored clinical trials was launched earlier this week by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry. So far, the register includes details of 65 trials sponsored by five companies.

Since 2001 the ABPI has encouraged member companies to register all clinical trials involving UK patients that form part of a licensing application for a new medicine. Participating companies are asked to register their phase III trials within three months of any product receiving its first licence in a major market. Ongoing trials can also be included.

"Major companies are already participating and more are close to joining," said Dr Trevor Jones, director general of the ABPI. "Our aim now is to encourage more member companies to join — so that anyone can have access to the information about new medicines that have been approved for prescribing."

Trial information listed on the website includes details of the sponsor company, design and methodology used, objective of the trial and some information about the trial interventions, planned and actual sample size, start and end date, and whether the trial data have been published. Trial results are not given.

The website can be found here. It is accessible to the public on a read-only basis. Participating companies can access their registered trials to update and add new studies.
