TributeCoventry In a tribute to the late Macdonald Coventry, Georgina Thomas, former chairman and vice-chairman of the Swindon branch of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, writes: It was with great sadness that I learnt of the death of Mac Coventry. I knew him for many years in Swindon where he was an active member of the pharmacy profession. He was especially active in the Swindon branch, being a member of the committee for many years. He held the position of vice-chairman and then chairman of the branch and was our area representative. I had the pleasure of attending several branch representatives' meetings at Lambeth with Mac and they were always a mixture of both the professional and the social and I know he will be sorely missed at these events. Mac always strove to encourage pharmacists to get together and learn from each other. He was always helpful, encouraging and supportive to me and my colleagues in Swindon. Mac was born and raised in London. He qualified from Sunderland in 1962 and spent some 41 years as a pharmacist in and around Swindon. After managing a few pharmacies he bought his own business at 171 Victoria Road, which he ran for nearly 18 years and built up to be an extremely successful pharmacy. After selling his business he still carried on in pharmacy as a practising locum in Swindon, Highworth, Cricklade and Wroughton, to name but a few places, and I am personally grateful for his help at short notice on more than one occasion. He also had many outside interests, his main one being music. Mac was a notable member of the Swindon Music Society, Swindon Operatic Society and NUBISS (New University of Bath in Swindon Singers). He played the organ in many of the local churches and acted as choirmaster. Other interests included steam railways he had a full running model railway in a room of the house. He loved classic cars and tinkering (as he put it) with clocks. Mac was an enthusiastic pharmacist and a larger-than-life member of the community. He will be sadly missed by many friends and colleagues and especially by his wife Ann, his children Susan, Claire, Andrew and John, and his eight grandchildren. |
