Do one in 10 men have chlamydia?

Up to 10 per cent of young men could be infected with chlamydia, new data suggest. This is substantially higher than previous estimates.

Researchers tested 798 male military recruits for chlamydia and found that 78 (9.8 per cent, 95 per confidence interval 7.8–12.04) were positive for C trachomatis. Of the 78 chlamydia-positive men, 69 (88 per cent) were asymptomatic. The authors say there was no evidence that the group of men were especially sexually active (Lancet 2003;361:1792).
