Costly wheeze

UK children aged one to five years with wheeze cost the health service £53m for the year 1998–99, a study calculates. Prescription costs amounted to £11m. Productivity losses amounted to a further £9.8m. "Primary prevention strategies at population level promise more cost savings than attempts in decreasing hospitalisations," the authors say (European Respiratory Journal 2003;21:1000).
