Five pharmacists designated as fellowsFive pharmacists have been designated as fellows of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society by the Society's panel of fellows. They are Professor Christine Bond, Sheila Phillips, Brian Matthews, John Patrick O'Brien and Jeannette Howe. The following brief biographical information is based on material provided by the panel of fellows to assist in identifying the pharmacists concerned. It does not necessarily represent the reasons for their designation as fellows. Professor Christine Bond, who registered in 1968, has since 2001 been professor of primary care (pharmacy) in the department of general practice at the University of Aberdeen. She is a former relief pharmacist for Boots The Chemists (1980–96) and consultant staff pharmacist to Shetland Health Board (1987–89). She is a member of the Society's Scottish Executive. She is a research referee for the Primary Care Research Centre, Manchester, and an external panel member of the Advisory Committees of the Chief Scientist's Office. Jeannette Howe, who registered in 1983, was appointed deputy chief pharmacist, Department of Health, in 2001. She has been a member of the Department of Health medicines management advisory group since 2001 and a United Kingdom delegate to the Council of Europe committee of experts on pharmaceutical questions since 1997. She served on the Society's concordance co-ordinating committee from 1998 to 2001 and has been a member of the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education board/executive since 1992. Brian Matthews, who registered in 1975, has since 1999 been senior director, EC registration, at Alcon Laboratories (UK) Ltd. He was formerly principal pharmacist and superintending pharmacist in the pharmaceutical secretariat of the Department of Health's Medicines Division, and later in the Medicines Control Agency, from 1981 to 1992. He is a former committee member and past chairman of the Society's Croydon branch. John O'Brien, who registered in 1973, is head of the pharmaceuticals and feed additives team, and principal pharmaceutical officer in the Veterinary Medicines Directorate, a position he has held since 1986. He has been a United Kingdom member of the European Union Committee for Veterinary Medicinal Products since 1997. He was secretary to the UK Veterinary Products Committee from 1989 to 1998. Sheila Phillips, who registered in 1961, has for the past 10 years been senior research associate in the Welsh Centre for Postgraduate Pharmaceutical Education. She is a member of All Wales Quality Assurance and Audit (NHS Cymru Wales, Welsh Office). She was a member of the implementation subgroup of the Pharmacy Sector Committee for the production of the Society's guidance document for dispensing standard operating procedures (2000–01).
