Glivec double dose no better in GIST

Doubling the standard dose of imatinib (Glivec) does not seem to improve outcomes when treating patients with advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST).

In a study of 615 patients, reductions in tumour load and one-year response rates were similar whether patients were treated with 400mg imatinib daily or 400mg imatinib twice daily. Patients given 800mg imatinib daily experienced more toxicity than patients given 400mg daily.

The Journal attended the 39th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, held in Chicago, Illinois, from 31 May until 3 June, courtesy of Eli Lilly. It was attended by more than 25,000 cancer specialists
