New pharmacy-based asthma care service launched

Improving treatment compliance among patients with asthma is the aim of a new pilot launched this month by Moss Pharmacy.

The service will be offered initially by eight of the company's pharmacies. It involves pharmacists developing an asthma action plan for patients, reviewing and educating the patient's inhaler technique, and monitoring the patient for six months.

Compliance problems, or difficulties with inhaler technique, will be tackled by the pharmacist but any issues that cannot be resolved will be referred to general practitioners. Patients found to have uncontrolled symptoms, drug interactions or a need for dose adjustment will also be referred to the GP. Any action taken by the pharmacist will be recorded in the patient's care plan.
