Hospital pharmacy staff up 9 per cent

Hospital pharmacy staff numbers in England rose by 9 per cent in 2002, according to National Health Service figures.

On 30 September last year there were 11,468 qualified pharmacy staff (pharmacists and technicians), making up 10,083 whole-time equivalents (WTEs), and 2,314 unqualified support staff (2,052 WTEs) working within the hospital and community health sector. The number of qualified staff had risen by 7.5 per cent over the previous year and the number of unqualified staff by 16 per cent. Pharmacy staff make up about 10 per cent of scientific, therapeutic and technical staff and 0.01 per cent of the 1.2 million total NHS staff.
