C-Reactive protein predicts stroke

Elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) are associated with an increased risk of stroke and may indicate unstable arterial plaque that is more likely to rupture, according to American researchers.

In a study involving 5,417 adults, they found that high CRP was an independent risk factor for stroke and that it was even more closely related to stroke among people with the thickest carotid artery walls.

The study is published online as a rapid access article in Circulation.
