Pass rate of 82.4 per cent in Society's summer registration examination

The pass rate in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's 2003 summer registration examination this year is 82.4 per cent. The number of candidates was 1,537, of whom 1,266 were successful.

The examination was the second to be held following the introduction of a revised syllabus and a new format. In 2002 the number of candidates was 1,499 and the pass rate was 94.8 per cent. In the new separate section of calculation questions, which candidates have to pass in addition to passing the examination as a whole, 91.9 per cent of candidates were successful compared with 97.7 per cent in 2002.

Of this year's 1,537 candidates, 1,388 were United Kingdom graduates or sandwich course students, of whom 1,178 passed (84.9 per cent) and 210 failed (15.1 per cent). The remaining 149 candidates were pharmacists from overseas seeking to register through the adjudicating route. Of these, 88 passed (59.1 per cent) and 61 failed (40.9 per cent).

For 245 of the 271 candidates who failed, this summer's examination was their first attempt.  For 15 of the failed candidates it was the second attempt, and for 11 it was the third attempt.

The next sitting of the examination takes place on 26 September.
