Society summary

Two new honorary members for the Society

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society has two new honorary members. They are Dr John Evans, a former Privy Council nominee member of the Society's Council, and Thomas Lönngren, executive director of the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products (EMEA).

The Society's Charter and Byelaws give the Council authority to elect as honorary members "such persons as have rendered distinguished service to the Society or to pharmacy". Dr Evans, a medical practitioner, served the Society as a lay Council member for nearly 15 years, retiring in 2002. He is a physician and barrister and a former deputy chief medical officer in the Department of Health.

Mr Lönngren is a Swedish pharmacy graduate. He has spent the past 25 years in regulatory affairs, mainly with Sweden's Medical Products Agency (Läkemedelsverket) and its predecessor, the medicines department of the National Board of Health and Welfare. He was appointed deputy director general of the Medical Products Agency in 1998 and has been executive director of the EMEA since 1 January 2001. His predecessor in that role, Fernand Sauer, is also an honorary member of the Society.
