Prescribing

Comfortable opening the can of worms

From Mr M. R. Hickey, MRPharmS

What a sad letter (PDF 50K) you published from Leonard Chapman (PJ, 30 August, p260). The thrust of his argument appears to be that we should not get involved in supplementary prescribing for fear of litigation. If we all took this attitude no new development would ever have happened for fear of unforeseen consequence.

I am training on the Scottish course at The Robert Gordon University to become one of the first supplementary pharmacist prescribers. I see it as nothing less than a superb opportunity; one of the best opportunities to be allowed to us “shopkeepers”. Eventually I would hope that having proved our worth some of us will eventually become independent prescribers. I do see myself as an expert on medicines, and it makes a nice change to be treated as one.

Leonard Chapman is thankful to have retired. I am thankful to be working at a time of profound change, and to be given the chance to help to develop the profession for the better. It is a can of worms I am quite comfortable opening.

Maurice Hickey
Forres, Morayshire
