Allopurinol may be useful for COPD

The xanthine oxidase inhibitor allopurinol may be useful in the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), new data suggest.

Researchers found that oral administration of allopurinol to COPD subjects reduced formation of reactive nitrogen species in the airways, which cause airway inflammation (European Respiratory Journal 2003;22:457).
