CPD
Logistics of CPD overseas
From Mr P. V. Rollason, FRPharmS
As a resident of Zimbabwe, I receive The Journal spasmodically, often
up to 12 weeks late, and sometimes not at all. Like so many overseas
pharmacists, I do not have access to the internet and therefore exhortation
to consult websites thereby is useless.
As a fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, I am
determined to remain on the full, active register. After more than 50
years in practice as a community pharmacist, I have now partially retired.
Having completed a year as a clinical consultant to a private hospital,
I am now engaged, albeit part time, in industrial pharmacy. Therefore,
the issue of continuing professional development is paramount to me and
my continuance in practice.
May I therefore ask for specific responses to the following points?
1. Will the CPD package be available overseas and if so, by what means?
2. Is it going to be necessary to have such a package in order to complete
acceptable continuing education, and will one have to pay a fee for
the privilege of obtaining it? If so, this is unlikely to be possible
from my country. Would I thus be penalised?
3. I am a founder/practitioner member of the College of Pharmacy Practice
in Britain. Each year, I submit to the college a summary of my own continuing
education programme in order to remain on their register. Would such
a summary as such be likely to be equally acceptable to the Society,
and if not, what different material is required?
4. Just how am I meant to submit my contribution each year and when?
It should be noted that postage from here is expensive and rarely reliable.
5. Will attendances at conferences and meetings, the presentation of
papers, the deliverance of lectures to either professional or lay audiences
be considered as acceptable?

Dr Robert Dewdney, head of education, Royal Pharmaceutical Society,
replies:
The Council intends that the principles of practising
and non-practising pharmacists are to be applied to all pharmacists — wherever they live. However, we are unable to answer these specific questions
at the moment because the best way to facilitate overseas pharmacists in
their planning and recording of CPD is still under consideration. |
