Tribute

Richardson In a tribute to the late David Welsh Richardson, DONALD MEEKISON writes:

David W. Richardson, one of the driving forces behind the creation of Numark, died on 5 May 2003 after a brave fight with motor neurone disease.

David was born in Dundee and educated at Harris Academy and Dundee School of Pharmacy, qualifying in 1955.

From 1956 until 1964 he worked in east, west and central Africa, first with May & Baker, then with Glaxo.

David opened his own pharmacy in Lochee, Dundee, in 1964, and a move to bigger premises in Lochee was followed in 1979, by the purchase of the pharmacy in Perth Road in which he did his preregistration training.

When David was joined in the business by his son John and daughter-in-law Karen, a further two pharmacies were purchased in Dundee. David took a consultant role in 1997. Customers have spoken with warmth and affection about the support and help he provided to domiciliary oxygen users and their carers over many years.

David was a member of the chemist contractors committee and the area pharmaceutical committee for over 30 years and was one of the forces behind the formation of Numark. In the Care Chemists years, with Arthur Trotman, David was the Scottish representative. He was a member of the Numark National Promotions Committee from its inception and was a member of the Numark board when the retail members took over the company.

David was a founder member and twice chairman of Tayside Round Table, a member of Dundee Rotary Club for over 35 years, a past deacon of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee, and was deacon convenor of the Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee during the city’s octocentenary celebrations.

David was a keen golfer. He was a past captain of Dalmunzie Golf Club, and was a member of Downfield, Blairgowrie, and Scotscraig Golf Clubs. David was also a great supporter and a past captain of Dundee and District Pharmacy Golf Club.

David was a passionate supporter of Rachel House, the children’s hospice, and even in the last year of his debilitating illness, he was visiting organisations, talking about the hospice, and raising funds for it.

David was a devoted family man and he and Shirley loved their time with son John, daughter Louise, and their families.

David was an enthusiast in everything he did and his many friends share his family’s sorrow at this time.
