Tribute

Whelan In a tribute to the late Frederick Cuthbert Whelan, COLIN DOORBAR writes:

It was with deep sadness that I heard the news on 3 October 2003 of the passing away of Fred Whelan of Cockermouth. I got to know Fred in 1972 and we were partners up until his retirement in 1985.

He was the epitome of a community pharmacist, nothing that he did was too much trouble and he served the people of the Workington pharmacy in a professional and compassionate way. I was often told stories of him being woken up in the night, during the period that he and his family lived in the flat over the pharmacy, for some reasons which would have annoyed many — but not Fred.

His “working” days finished some years ago but he will also be sadly missed among the many friends that he made in Cockermouth. It is pleasing to me that his name will, hopefully, live on for many years to come as “F. C. Whelan Chemists Ltd”.
