Petition planned for Charter referendum
The Save Our Society group is organising a petition aimed at compelling the Royal Pharmaceutical Society to hold a referendum of the membership on its draft Charter.
The petition is being put together by former Council member Hassan Argomandkhah.
In a statement issued on 20 October, he said: “The issue is not
simply whether we approve or disapprove the revised draft Charter ...
the fundamental issue is about the erosion of our democratic rights as
ordinary members of the Society.”
The special general meeting of the Society held in June this year carried
a motion calling for a referendum to be held once the draft Charter was
finalised.
Mr Argomandkhah said that pharmacists can support his petition by sending
him a message stating “I support the call for a referendum on the
draft Charter”, together with their names and registration numbers
(H. A. Chemist, 7B Baileys Lane, Halewood Village, Merseyside L26 2XB,
text 07751 892777, e-mail argomandkhah@blueyonder.co.uk,
fax 0151 280 5173). The closing date is 1 December after which the petition
will be
handed over to the Society.
The Society’s position was set
out by the President, Dr Gill Hawksworth
(PJ, 11 October, p523). She said that a simple “yes or no” referendum
would not do justice to the range of issues that have been raised during
the consultation on a new Charter.
