Variation in diabetes response

Patients with a particular genetic subtype of diabetes have increased sensitivity to sulphonylureas, researchers say. In patients with type 2 diabetes caused by mutations in the HNF-1a gene (hepatocyte nuclear factor 1 alpha), response to gliclazide was five times greater than their response to metformin. Their response to gliclazide was four times greater than that of patients with type 2 diabetes not caused by the HNF-1a mutation (Lancet 2003;362:1275).
