Ramadan

Co-trimoxazole is restricted

From Mr C. Anton

I was concerned to see that the article (PJ, 10 November 2001, p691) mentioned in the news item about Ramadan (PJ, 25 October, p572) advocates that patients may wish to consider taking co-trimoxazole for upper respiratory tract infections because of its twice daily dosing schedule.

The Committee on Safety of Medicines recommends that, because of serious skin and haematological adverse effects, co-trimoxazole should only be used for Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis when there is evidence of bacterial sensitivity.
