Dermatix gel

Do we need Harry Potter lessons

From Mr P. Ralston, MRPharmS

Recently I received an EC10 for Dermatix Gel, which was unknown to me. Having checked in the Drug Tariff to confirm that it was not on the blacklist (it is not and indeed is not mentioned at all in the latest edition) I ordered it.

It was then brought to my attention that it was not allowed as such — but why? I asked the Prescription Pricing Authority and the National Pharmaceutical Association and the answer is simple — it is not a gel but an appliance, not listed in the Drug Tariff and so not allowed.

I have only 40 years’ experience as a pharmacist and I must admit the answer stumped me. How are we supposed to know this? Do we need Harry Potter lessons or am I the stupid one?

Peter Ralston
