Amiodarone benefit for post-surgical AF

Amiodarone is effective in preventing atrial fibrillation after heart surgery, researchers reported at the American Heart Association conference.

The PAPABEAR study compared amiodarone with placebo in 601 patients. Atrial fibrillation occurred in 16 per cent of the amiodarone group and 30 per cent of the placebo group. This was true for patients aged over and under 65 years, patients having coronary artery bypass, patients having valve surgery, and with or without concomitant beta-blocker therapy.

The Journal’s attendance at the AHA conference was made possible by Pfizer

Coverage of the conference is available on the Reports page
