Start statins in children with FH

Children who have familial hypercholesterolaemia should be given statins, say researchers.

In a two-year study of 211 patients aged between eight and 18 years, they found that pravastatin was safe, well tolerated and effective compared with placebo. A decrease in thickness of the carotid artery wall was seen in the pravastatin group compared with an increase in thickness observed in the placebo group. “Medication must be started during puberty or before,” the researchers commented.
