Lord Hunt to chair new safety agency
Lord Hunt, a former junior health minister, has been appointed chairman of the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA).
Lord Hunt was selected by the National Health Service Appointments Commission
to succeed Professor Rory Shaw, who has chaired the agency since its
inception in July 2001. Lord Hunt was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of
State for Health in the House of Lords from 1999 until early in 2003.
During his time as a minister he held responsibility for NHS pharmacy
services. He was one of three ministers who resigned from the Government
over its decision to take Britain to war against Iraq.
The NPSA is a special health authority and is responsible for co-ordinating
the efforts of the NHS in England and Wales to report and learn from
mistakes and to put in place measures to prevent them recurring.
