Leicestershire and Rutland branch celebrates Diwali
Pharmacists from the Leicestershire and Rutland branch of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society celebrated Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, on 22 November.
Organised by branch chairman Divyesh Shah and former branch chairman
Rajni Hindocha, the event was the branch’s seventh Diwali celebration.
The event was instigated in 1997 to provide a shared cultural evening
for all pharmacists in the Leicestershire area.
Around 200 pharmacists and their families sat down to dinner at the Wigston
Stage Hotel. Asian dancers and musicians provided entertainment.
The principal speaker was Martin Ward, marketing director of UniChem.
Other guests included Professor Nilesh Samani, professor of cardiology
at the University of Leicester and consultant cardiologist at Glenfield
Hospital, and Professor Larry Goodyer, the new head of the school of
pharmacy at Leicester’s De Montfort University.
During the evening, events were organised to raise money for several
charities, the main one being Heart Search, to which a cheque for £500
was presented, with an additional £500 contributed by UniChem.
