Use of cariporide post-surgery

Cariporide, a sodium/hydrogen exchange inhibitor, might reduce the risk of myocardial infarction in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery. It prevents calcium overload in cells, associated with ischaemic reperfusion injury that can lead to MI.

A study presented at the recent American Heart Association conference showed cariporide significantly reduced the risk of MI but was associated with an increased risk of stroke. Researchers comment that more studies are needed to see if it is possible to dissociate the adverse effects from the beneficial effects of cariporide.

The Journal’s attendance at the AHA conference was made possible by Pfizer

Coverage of the conference is available on the Reports page
