New prostate agentsA potential new agent for benign prostatic hyperplasia has been developed by a team at University College London. Currently available treatments either inhibit the proliferation of prostatic cells or reduce the increased tone. The team identified an enzyme, Rho-kinase, in prostatic smooth muscle cells of rats and humans. An inhibitor demonstrated both smooth muscle relaxation and inhibition of smooth muscle cell proliferation in vitro (Journal of Urology 2003;170:2517). |
