New pharmacist prescribers come a step closer this week
The first pharmacist supplementary prescribers were due formally to complete their courses on 30 January, after The
Journal went to press. However, it will be at least six weeks before they can write and sign their first prescriptions.
The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen expected about 15 students on
its supplementary prescribing course to be passed by its examination
board this week. Other students in the first intake of the course are
still undertaking their learning in practice.
Andrew Gardner, head of registration at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society,
explained that the registration process will take six to eight weeks.
First, the education institute needs to send the Society a list of students
who pass the supplementary prescribing course. Then the pharmacists have
to apply to the Society for registration. Application forms are available
from the Society and should be on its website soon. A one-off registration
fee of £35 is payable.
The Society will annotate the register to say that the pharmacist is
a registered supplementary prescriber. Any employers wishing to check
a pharmacist’s registration status will be able to contact the
Society for confirmation.
Pharmacists with queries about the registration process can contact the
Society’s registration department on 020 7572 2322. |
